When searching for a glyph pronunciation, use either hiragana or katakana (not English letters).

Searches are performed using full-words only, so if you enter only part of a word, no result may be returned. This method is much faster than allowing partial-word searches, so please structure your keywords accordingly. You may combine multiple terms by adding a + sign before each word.

Exact matches in English can be searched for by enclosing multiple keywords in double-quotes. For example, "busted-up feet" (including both quotation marks) would generate a result set which matches that exact string in its entirety.

Feel free to enter kanji glyphs as well, including multiple glyph elements separated by at least one blank space if any or all of the kanji are wanted in the results, or, place multiple glyphs in double quotes with no spaces to return an exact match.

NO RŌMAJI! There are too many goofy and incorrect ways to represent Japanese pronunciations using so-called "Roman characters" to include in our database. When searching for a Japanese pronunciation, use either hiragana or katakana (not English letters; for example, entering "uwaki" or "jijii" will certainly fail).

Within Level

Our internal engine with a comprehensive listing includes over 13,500 glyphs, 325,000 vocabulary entries, and 18,800 verbs each with 44 various Japanese conjugations. These searches require some time, naturally.

Please search for whole English words, Chinese glyphs, or Japanese hiragana/katakana. Entering a search term using rōmaji or Janglish will more than likely fail to find any results unless that word is also commonly used in English, such as "Toyota" or "sake," but the results may not be entirely what you expect.

As an example, entering the keyword "yodogawa" using Hepburn, Nihon-shiki, Kunrei-shiki romanization, or any of the many variants, will not return results. Entering よどがわ will return the name of a river in Ōsaka, 淀川 (Yodo River). Stated another way, you may not want to use rōmaji from other dictionaries as a guide for proper Japanese pronunciation, or, as search keywords, since both strategies generally fail.

Listed dictionary contents are not maintained by debunKanji, but rather are supplied for your convenience and are the copyrighted materials of other legal entities, including the inadequate romanization methods used to display any results.
