Many「dormant insects」depicting cocoons containing silk caterpillar moth larva. Two「regurgitating」over「tongue in mouth」and two「insects.」The doubling of a「man blowing (chunks) with his head turned to one side and barfing」and「worm」is for emphasis of the volume expectorated, to mean a「insect that spits a great volume」in this case, of silk fiber. A single fiber spun to form one cocoon averages about one kilometer in length, from one end to the other. Later, simplified to mean「worm from heaven」perhaps because the silk caterpillar is often found eating leaves of the「tree of heaven」(Ailanthus altissima) and leaves from this tree produce stronger but inferior silk than from mulberry leaves, or perhaps, because the image conjured by the glyph was less grotesque. Note that the animals which spin silk cocoons are not actually worms at all, but rather SILK SPINNING CATERPILLARS.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language.
