Meaning FALSE STEPS, NOT AS IT SEEMS, FAKE, ASSUMED, FALSE PROGRESS, and something BORROWED is NOT TRULY yours and eventually must be returned to the owner. Compare this glyph with the related glyph (段) as it seems to imitate or resemble the individual elements of 'steps, stages of progress' (other than「crotch」something that is often imitated but never quite duplicated). Sources say the right element means「emulate」(as「back and forth with crotch」) and all these elements together seem to be implying that someone is feigning or pretending some sort of progress in intercourse without actually penetrating anything for various possible reasons that are exemplified when this glyph is combined with another element (see all the Used-In glyphs as examples).

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
