　In Chinese,「repeatedly bobbing」and「the loser」drawn within「prick.」Base of the glyph resembles branches that extent very low and flat above「soil」: the HORNBEAM, or IRONWOOD TREE that grows as an understory, underneath the branches of a much larger tree (or, one「woody」handing off to another「woody」), therefore the hornbeam always appears to be the「loser in the contest」for growing space. So named because the wood is extremely hard, as is iron or horn bone. Its flowers are pendulous catkins that DANGLE and appear to be SUSPENDED and DRIBBLING FLUIDS. Note the connection with「horny, boners, iron woody, dribbling fluids, dangling」etc. Branches grow very close to the ground, ALMOST, NEARLY touching the dirt, APPROACHING the lowest possible height and serving as ground cover only a few inches above the soil. The fruits also are SUSPENDED, and many share a common stalk, growing in clusters and DANGLING from a long, single stem,「twisting」in the breeze, as might something heavy hanging from a low branch.
　Scholars suggest the glyph is referring to mail bags suspended and dangling, with people actually sitting in trees, one person looking in each direction of a road watching for a postal rider, but it is more likely that a quicker response might be had by people located physically on the ground and loading the mail. Moreover, the location of the hornbeam beneath other trees, and the low stature of the tree and branches make this unlikely and impractical. Perhaps a flag signaling to stop for a pickup was what dangled from a branch somewhere. The tree represents either literally or figuratively, hanging the severed heads of the losing side, a defeated enemy, with all the accompanying twisting, dangling, and dripping while awaiting pickup and delivery to the winning side's liege lord.
