Either a portion of a dike failing as flood waters overrun a chunk of the soil wall that failed, or, a spewing appendage as it protrudes from an anus after compacting the soil into an internal wall. A protuberance is a tuber that sticks out forward…a tuber is a swollen, fleshy, soil-covered outgrowth of a stem. Putting it all together describes the scene.
