コオロギの一種で、2枚の羽にある「拷問道具」のような器官を、まるで自分の体の一部をのこぎりで切るかのように「整然と一列に」こすりつけて音を出す「昆虫」。「コオロギが発する音は、一般に「さえずり」と呼ばれます。学名は「鳴き声」です。鳴くのはオスのコオロギだけです。音は、各羽の下部に沿って走る大きな静脈で、櫛のように「歯」（鋸歯）で覆われている「鳴き声器官」から発せられます。鳴き声は、片方の羽の上部をもう一方の羽の下部の歯にこすりつけることで出されます。この動作を行う際、コオロギは羽を持ち上げ、開いた状態にします。そうすることで、羽の膜が音響帆として機能します。コオロギが足をこすり合わせて鳴くというのは、よく知られた伝説です。」
