An OVERSEER is someone who looks over the shoulder and down his or her nose at others who are hard at work, evaluating performance, often with a snobbish attitude and not performing the actual grunt work of the lower-level service workers (no woodies). A more literal interpretation of these elements individually: someone above who is looking over someone else below. Note the relationship of the English words, 'crude' and 'crud':「a deposit of filth, incrusted matter, or other objectionable substance. A despicable or disagreeable person. Something worthless or objectionable. Exaggeration, or flattery. A vaguely defined disease or disorder, as a rash」

Today, steppes are vast, semi-arid, tree-less (no woodies) grass-covered plains. Meaning「lowlands」in Russian, perhaps since long ago these areas were low and somewhat marshy (elements refer to a stinky, mucky place), preventing the growth of trees. Today in the days of global heating, many steppe regions are much drier for much of each year, suggested as a symptom of climate change over the millennia. OVERSEER may relate to ranchers herding grazing animals on the steppes.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect.
