A「wooden boundary marker」and「being out of reach for a while」describes blocking either a hat or shoes (both of which normally have「an unmistakable, distinctive odor」) to define or increase the internal size limit by stretching, and not being able to use the item for some time. Same explanation applies to turning a「block of wood surrounded from above」on a lathe, also with an unmistakable smell, with the「wood boundaries」lengthening of the final item as shavings are removed.
　Alternatively, a「woody」that seems to grow in length as does a spindle in a lathe, and increase in girth as do skins stretching that were formed into shoes being blocked, with an increasing head size requiring a larger hat to cover it, all with a distinctive unmistakable odor, can also describe male genitals during the arousal stage which may fit the elements「woody and declaring it publicly, announce.」

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else.
