「Woodies spread wide like a crane in courtship display」or members of a group of people surrounding and covering an area, a bunch of pricks lined up across a fallen「tree, wood」used as a FOOTBRIDGE covering a crevasse, or perhaps across a trail anywhere in the woods as a gate to block passage unless the TOLL fee is paid. Dead and fallen shii trees have many strong branches extending perpendicularly at all angles, making them useful as handles while walking across the trunk laid over a creek as a bridge. These same strong branches extending perpendicularly at all angles when many felled trees are piled atop one another form a wonderful blockage. The guys blocking the bridge and collecting fees as a LEVY therefore have a MONOPOLY on crossing the river gorge. Clearly, human beings have been thinking of various ways to personally profit by exploiting and bullying others for a long time.
A MONOPOLY is absolute and unchallenged economic power, often granted by the legal authority of a king or government who share in the spoils as was the case with the first corporate charters of England, and this glyph is perhaps related to 権 and 權 meaning AUTHORITY, PRIVILEGE.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect.
