Other than the lord's palaces and castles, the only business enterprises that generated sufficient profit to afford large pavilions and places for many guests to eat, be entertained, and sleep with service providers were the brothels, temples, and shrines used as part of shamanist religious services and the offer to 'make one feel divine.' For many centuries, no one else possessed the wealth and resources to build pavilions, now a part of today's shrines and temples that are often located near castles for protection and for client convenience, most of which still retain the place name and advertisements carved into rocks located on the grounds and used to attract clients for brothel services. Modern replacements may be so-called gentlemen's clubs located near military bases, and so on.
