Formerly, seemed to indicate SELECT FOR REMOVAL rather than making a conscious choice of what one desires.「Talent, hand use」for picking or SELECTING by grabbing a person from a「line of slaves or other prisoners」being auctioned while「guarded」to take her or him home as your own slave, or, pulled by the boss in order to remove a poor quality offering from the line (「ward off, resist netting with fecal emissions」)…either way, DIFFERENTIATING one from among many by using some sort of criteria.
　Modern replacement element of「genitals taut, leashed」that describes tying the genitals of prisoners together with a minimum of slack between persons to prevent escape, much like a dog and bitch that cannot run and escape hunters while copulating, or, refers to selecting a slave from a line-up of taut buttocks (no saggy-asses, please).「Talented use of hands」with「scrotum, anus and penis」will also mean the one with that talent will be the one SELECTED. Simplified Chinese now uses 'talented hands with crotch offering' (择).

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
