Some scholars say the left element depicts the process of manufacturing charcoal and now means「black」with「dog.」It is unlikely that a「black dog」is any quieter, silent, or less disturbing than another color of dog. Nevertheless, euphemistically applying a black dog as one's very sick penis, BURIAL POSITION, SILENT, DARK, QUIESCENT, and writing one's memoirs with no new experiences all make some sense.
　Roasting a puppy dog in the same manner as roasting charcoal, a long, slow process that will really bring out the full flavor of the meat, or, roasting the puppy using charcoal, for that fine, hickory-smoked taste that is「as it should be」for「truly satisfying contentment」(related glyph 然 depicts these feelings, literally「roasted meat of puppy dog」). The now-missing animal(s) could very well be the reason for SILENCE and being UNDISTURBED, and for full, contented stomachs. If all the puppies in the hamlet have been roasted, it will be SILENT and UNDISTURBED. Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of bored old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else.
