Describes the processing of the single most-useful plant in the history of human beings: separating hemp fibers from stalks to make clothing, rope, paper, etc. Hemp stalks are fairly sturdy, and stones were often used during the initial stage. The process of extracting fibers from hemp involved cutting down the very hard, stiff, turgid and sticky stalks of hemp, allowing them to lay in the field while retting to soften the outer hurds and become flaccid, and then beating the stalks to separate the fibers for making cloth, discarding the hurd byproduct as superfluous scrap. Traditional font elements of「hemp with stone」but modern fonts use「clusters of sticky pricks in cavern.」…both seem to indicate BREAKING THE SURFACE, ABRADE, CHAFE, SCOURING, HONE and so on. As「cannabis and stoned」or as「in bed with woody and testicles」the glyph means TO WASTE ONE'S TIME, WASTED, STONED as it does in English, too.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
