「空気の悪さ」がどういうわけかマラリアを引き起こすと信じても、一般の人ーは性交をやめなかったようだし、中国の賢人たちもそれについて冗談を言うのをやめなかったようだ。「性交中に口と鼻を覆ったり、息を止めたりして、その瞬間に相手の吐く息を吸い込まないようにすると、セックスをやめることになる…そうすると、その行為をしている人は、その場にいる他の人全員に「目立つように」マ ークされることになる」。

It was formerly believed in the West that MALARIA was spread by MIASMA, or bad vapors, bad air and not by parasitic protozoans living within the blood ingested by the「needles」of mosquitoes that later fill the sufferers「liver」as the Chinese apparently understood based upon these elements. Malaria causes seizures, during which a person is「unable to speak, mute, dumb.」「Liver damage」from mosquito「standing」on one's skin and「vertically reciprocating rod」or proboscis, the needle used to suck blood.

　The belief that malaria could be transmitted by breathing the bad air exhaled by a sufferer caused such folks to be「branded, marked in a conspicuous manner to all.」
　Believing that 'bad air' somehow caused malaria did not seem to stop the common folk from copulating, or, did not stop the Chinese sages from joking about it:「screwing mute」would be the result of covering one's mouth and nose or holding one's breath while fornicating so as to not breathe in the exhaled breath of the partner(s) at the moment…once more causing the person doing so to be「marked in a conspicuous manner to all」others present during that session.
　Furthermore, since hanging around sick people and breathing the same air as they do was thought to cause illness, as is thought today as well, another result was that participants normally desired to get in, do their business, and then get out of the brothel as soon as possible, hence these elements are also「illness that causes erection coming early, before others.」And lastly, with everyone quietly holding their breath and not talking, laughing, yapping like a horny dog or howling like a wolf and so on, MALARIA was also dubbed the「illness that enables sounds of screwing」to be heard echoing in the caverns.
