「Old man」with「child」presumes a natural bond exists between them as DEVOTION TO PARENTS, but stop and ask yourself now how you feel about your own parents…most likely, there are mixed feelings and not all is purely devotional.

Formerly, the top element was「center of the head」with「crossed, whacking motion」or「whacking hand」over either「child」or「maggot」(敎) that pundits claim depicted the practice of whacking love and obedience into the head of a child, if such a thing is possible…more likely, the father wanted some other form of whacking with the son, or perhaps at the time Chinese people had accepted the remote possibility of maggots having a sexual preference?
