「Threads from tree nest.」「Loose with loose and dripping small stream」of the left elements refer formerly to the thick protein liquids drawn from the spinneret of a silk caterpillar that harden into cocoon thread upon contact with air, building a「nest」in which to metamorphose. The natural process when not harvested for silk is for a cocoon to be cut from the inside by the escaping moth into thousands of short, useless segments as a metamorphosed caterpillar begins to cut its way out, emerging as a moth. Each cocoon is formed from a single fiber of silk that averaged 800 to 1,200 meters in length (3/5 mile) and formed from about 300,000 figure-eight twists. However, if the caterpillar was not crushed (「mashed head」) or scalded to death soon enough, and it began to use its mouth to cut its own way out of the cocoon, one end of the bundled thread would be chewed through, causing that cocoon's single long thread to be separated into thousands of smaller, useless pieces (「small segments of roughly equal length」), with many ends, in total confusion as the cocoon softened and unraveled, separating into a confused mass of 300,000 or so short fibers when placed into hot water with other cocoons for softening and unraveling.
