Glyph elements  [ Toggle Font ]

Meanings of elements
REGRET OR DISAPPROVAL, GASP, SIGH OF DISGUST, AN INTERJECTION OR EXCLAMATION with LATERAL RECIPROCATING ROD MOTION
…or: BREATHING with ROD in MOUTH
…or: SUN, DAY, BRIGHT AND FLASHING, BRILLIANT (?) with LOVE, LOVING
…or: SPEAKING, SAY WHILE HAVING A REASON TO PRETEND, A PRETEXT, EXCUSE GIVEN TO HIDE THE TRUE REASON FOR SOMETHING with TO PATRONIZE AFFECTION FOR FONDNESS OR LOVE
…or: TONGUING MOUTH with REPEATED HEAD BOBBING and with DAZZLE, STUFF FLYING OUT, SURROUNDED by SPEWING PENIS with SPREAD FEET, HEAD in CROTCH, HEELS BESIDE EARS, BEING INVERTED, TURNED UPSIDE-DOWN
「Array of regret, disgusted with that rod」or「to speak patronizingly about affection and love, speaking while having a reason to pretend with a pretext or as excuse given to hide the true reason for patronizing affection for, being fond of someone, loving a person」describes one's feeling for another in a SPEAKING MANNER that is OBSCURE, DIM, VAGUE, fraught with AMBIGUITY, and so on (i.e., do not bite the hand that feeds you).
Somewhat confusing if using the literal, commonly understood meanings of these elements as「sun loving」that ought to connote contrary meanings to 靉. To make the sceptics happy, perhaps we can stretch the meanings to suggest what the glyph depicts is a condition that would「love sunshine」to dispel obscurity and darkness. Realize that a sweltering hot midday of midsummer is not so in need of more sunshine. It is the dim, cold, dark obscurity that would「love some sun.」…maybe, or is that too much of a stretch in inductive logic?
Alternatively, other connotations are possible if in fact the left element is「tonguing mouth」and not「day, sun.」Someone assuming the physical posture or position depicted by the right element would surely not be able to「speak, say」much with「tongue in mouth」uttering only garbled, OBSCURE, VAGUE, AMBIGUOUS mumblings, since the ability to adequately exercise one's larynx in such a constrained position is obviously compromised—just plain breathing would be, too: elements are also「breathing with rod in mouth.」Fertile imaginations can run wild describing this glyph.

External source definitions …excluding politically incorrect concepts and other meanings deemed offensive today; may include extended definitions, euphemisms, and mnemonics)
Chinese: (of daylight) dim; obscure; clandestine; dubious
Japanese EDRDG: dark, not clear
Unihan extended: obscure, dim, ambiguous, vague

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...) Despite how seemingly bad our human existence is today, do you actually believe that the so-called good old days were any better? Or could they have been worse?

By the way, with a limited number of the same elements used by the sages again and again to form these glyphs, you should expect to find the same explanations again and again, as tedious as that may become, and as an inherent trait of any lexicon. This site explains multiple meanings of glyphs ignored or censored by other sources, generally as being too embarrassing to admit today.
