This glyph also is often formed using「side to side scorpion tail」(己) but also meaning「a male self, copulate, decrepit penis」(one that is splitting in two?) perhaps indicating within a large city that this is a dark, narrow passageway between buildings, an ALLEY, LANE, NARROW STREET, with the associated implications of a group of buddies going to town and purchasing some entertainment of the sort not readily advertised in their rural district. It is significant that the「snake」element is used, since the male snake possesses a forked penis, or hemipenes, branching as do CROSSROADS at an intersection, paths and roads snake together, and back alleyways of a town or city are often where brothel services are offered for males to copulate…not to further mention the euphemistic snake-penis-phallic and back-ally, rear-entry concepts. Upper element 共 formerly referred to「two penises joined with emissions」: hemipenes are half-open penises as a pair of intromittent organs of male squamates, with semen troughs exposed, forming a LANE, NARROW PATH in which the semen travels to the female's cloaca (see 虫, as snake).
The quarter, the district, crossroads, fork in the road of life as in a MAJOR LIFE-ALTERING DECISION whether to do it, or, not. Incidentally, snakes do orgy whilst copulating, for that matter, in large seething balls of meat.
According to some scholars, referred to the walking lanes used to connect villages with paths snaking together, yet that explanation would not fit the wide-open rural countryside rather than narrow alleyways or back lanes within a crowded town.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
