A「cavern」with「twenty or so」「long cloths」folded over many times to create a SEAT CUSHION. Also meaning HOLD OR RESERVE A PLACE OR POSITION (in the cavern), and now referring to one's PLACE IN A SEATING ARRANGEMENT. Top element of「cavernous」with the middle element「twenty or so」or,「many multiple various times」with「loincloth」perhaps indicating the number of times the cloth had been used before becoming too soiled. Back in the old days, guests normally came and went to that sort of cavern, the shaman's cave of wonders without any reservation since it was still a bit difficult to call ahead of time due to the dearth of microwave transmission relay towers supporting cellphones. The people who truly needed to hold reserved seating were not the clients, but instead were those service providers working in the cavern while vying for the best locations, by the entrance for example. Interestingly, in Japanese an additional meaning of RATHER applies, such as when a guest visiting one SEAT would prefer another, different SEAT and also RATHER enjoy the skills of that person sitting upon it, ostensibly signifying that the client had a choice in the matter of which service provider was preferred and could move at any time, but all the working girls needed to stay put or else risk losing their RESERVED POSITION (restroom breaks excepted out of fairness to all).

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...)
