「Measured flow」of a nautical distance.「Measured distance」of「fluid, flow.」「Wetland muck with plugging orifice」may be the only outlet available to sailors at sea miles from other ports, miles from nowhere. Actually, a nautical mile is a relatively recent invention, and is determined as one arc second of the circumference of the Earth at the equator: there are 21,600 arc seconds (360° × 60“) in any circle, and the equator is fairly long, but 1/21600 of that distance appeared to be approximately 1,852 meters or about 6,080.2 feet when initially conceived (presently 6,076 feet), give or take, and that is one nautical mile. Another way of expressing it is by assuming the distance from one of the poles to the Equator is 10,000,000 meters, and splitting that distance by 90° (one-quarter of the way around the 360° Earth), and then dividing each of those degrees by 60 arc seconds. The measure of speed as a KNOT refers to one nautical mile per hour.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...)
