Actually, a nautical mile is a relatively recent invention, and is determined as one arc second of the circumference of the Earth at the equator: there are 21,600 arc seconds (360° × 60“) in any circle, and the equator is fairly long, but 1/21600 of that distance appeared to be approximately 1,852 meters or about 6,080.2 feet when initially conceived (presently 6,076 feet), give or take, and that is one nautical mile. Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of bored old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
