Shivering in winter may be from the cold, fear of freezing to death, fear of starvation, or all of the above.
　「Cold with essential plant」: in order to remain alive throughout long winters, folks relied upon the chestnut, high in vitamin C that prevents scurvy. Sweet chestnuts do not always fall from the tree when ripe, so each tree needs to be forcibly SHAKEN in order to loosen the nuts until they fall, normally by someone up in the tree SHAKING the branches who may also fall along with the nuts.
