Glyph elements  [ Toggle Font ]

Meanings of elements
FETTERED and SCREWING, TWISTING
…or: METAL, PERSON in DOWNWARD THRUSTING STANCE with TREE TRUNK
…or: PERSON in DOWNWARD THRUSTING STANCE with TORSO
An EARTHENWARE CLAY-FIRED BOWL-SHAPED TERRA COTTA CONTAINER, a clay-fired basin or vessel. Modern elements are「metal」with「shaft, trunk」but the original item apparently was not metallic. Original glyph () was「canning, packing meat, horse pestle in cavity」with「woody shaft, trunk」(rather than person spurting with downward thrusting motions of penis).「Canning」also uses the element of「downward thrusting motions」as horsemeat, an item often canned initially for later use in winter or while on the trail, and perhaps this is why「metal」was substituted in addition to being the material more likely used for a large pot today.
Seemingly depicted the PROCESS OF CANNING FOOD as a very large clay-fired bowl or basin placed over burning logs from a「tree trunk」(not small branches) to create sufficient heat to boil a large quantity of water for long duration, necessary during the CANNING PROCESS. Also describes an earthenware pot used indoors containing smaller amounts of burning firewood to heat a living space, when walls and such were not as tightly sealed and the inhabitants might not be asphyxiated by carbon monoxide. One's SKULL as a「clay pot full of horse intestines」or what many folks still think about often:「woody shaft packing meat with horse pestle in cavity.」A clay BEGGING BOWL for alms. Later, used for a large terra cotta potting vessel as landscaping pots of various sizes, likely due to the inclusion of the「tree trunk」element.

Modern definitions (that generally disregard history) …excluding politically incorrect concepts and other meanings deemed offensive today; may list only pigeonholed definitions, euphemisms, or meaningless mnemonics)
Chinese: variant of 缽|钵
Japanese: bowl, pot, basin, flowerpot, crown, brainpan
Unihan extended: earthenware basin; alms bowl (Sanskrit paatra)
EDRDG: bowl; rice tub; pot; crown

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...) Despite how bad the human world is today, do you actually believe that the so-called good old days were any better? Or they could only have been worse?

By the way, with a limited number of the same elements used by the sages again and again to form these glyphs, you should expect to find the same explanations again and again, as tedious as that may become, and as an inherent trait of any dictionary. This site explains the dual meanings of glyphs most often ignored by other sources that provide you with only the sanctioned definition, generally.
