　Certainly a less likely explanation, but「hand with vertical motion, rod」with「child」may have referred to rapping the child in the head with knuckles, a common way parents deal with an unruly child, creating a 'knucklehead' in effect but used to prevent other dangerous behavior it is hoped, MAINTAINING the child ALIVE and IN EXISTENCE, SURVIVING.
