STORING a DEPOSIT of knowledge for the future, if needed again. Certainly a less likely explanation, but「hand with vertical motion, rod」with「child」may have referred to rapping the child in the head with knuckles, a common way parents deal with an unruly child, creating a 'knucklehead' in effect but used to prevent other dangerous behavior it is hoped, MAINTAINING the child ALIVE and IN EXISTENCE, SURVIVING. The same technique is at times used as negative reinforcement, as part of the teaching/ learning process by attempting to whack KNOWLEDGE of all sorts into a child's head or force them to THINK, FEEL, CONSIDER, and to KNOW by emphasizing a particular point…not the most effective means of accomplishing that end, but one caused by and MAINTAINED due to parental frustration and likely acquired as a child from one's own parents. Knuckle-heading is a technique that has been STORED, DEPOSITED deeply in their child rearing skill set and memories, one not likely to be overcome nor forgotten…at least it gets the attention of the child, but also draw ire, especially as the teenage years approach.
