「Under roof, deliberately out-of-reach, in bed, subdued by reaming the penis with a bougie on all sides of crotch.」Formerly referring to an outbuilding at a shaman's temple or shrine (the witch who also was a doctor, remember?) where ill people were laid, LYING DOWN, and not permitted to depart as a quarantine measure. Long ago, normal people who were not ill did not use a bed to sleep upon. Beds were only for the sick or royalty. Another interpretation as the outbuilding with beds and「hand firmly grasping surrounding crotch」(formerly「hand firmly grasping surrounding loincloth」) refers to the fact that sick people are often incontinent, with a frequent changing of securely bound loincloths in use prior to the days of catheters and other such devices. Modern meaning of LIE IN BED, SLEEP is literally「in bed under your roof with hand firmly grasping, surrounding your crotch」perhaps refers to the fact that people are often horny in bed, and so on. TOMB refers to「eternally asleep」after being sick with the dead's hands genteelly placed over his groin「firmly grasping and surrounding his crotch.」

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect.
