「Cold with protrusions」refers to SEEING CLEARLY, VIVID, DISCERNING WITH CLARITY what is as plain as the nose on one's face, and that is brisk, cold temperatures cause involuntary nipple erection in both males and females,「cold protuberances」(see 冱「cold and one on each side」)…nobody seems to know exactly why, but everyone knows it's true.
「Low temperatures stimulate the tiny muscles attached to your hair follicles, which cause the hairs to stand on end. In other, hairier mammals, this process, known as the pilomotor reflex, can produce a layer of insulation. In humans, it seems to be vestigial. The areolae (the colored areas surrounding the nipples) also have smooth muscle cells that contract when stimulated, and cold weather can make the skin pucker inward while the nipples stick out. The squeezing of these muscles may also lead to increased protrusion of the Montgomery glands—the little bumps around the nipples that secrete fluid to facilitate breast-feeding. (Both men and women have Montgomery glands. Under the right circumstances, men can even lactate.) Few studies have been done on why the areolae, in particular, might be reactive to the cold.」

Meaning EXTREME COLD by pairing「frozen, ice」and「bared teeth, fangs.」Right element of「fangs」was a set of jaws with teeth showing both upper and lower, so that this element may infer someone with their lips open and baring chattering teeth, as might happen if very cold. NICE COMPLEXION is a reference to the rosy cheeks many folks have on a very cold day. CHEERFUL LOOK is really the「frozen smile of chattering teeth.」SERENE refers to no animal sounds on a very cold day (they're smart, they're all inside their dens, burrows, and nests). It is reported that death by freezing is a SERENE way to go, although no one has lived to tell about it. Severe hypothermia causes stupor as the brain shuts down, perhaps suggested here by「dripping fangs」as serenely drooling while feeling no pain.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...)
