The human sense of smell provides (some) prior protection against slurping on anything unclean or infected, if not ignored. Alternatively, elements are suggesting to eat something without fail in every case (i.e., to swallow), if it smells fragrant in a good sense: smells good = swallow. Smells bad = run away.
