[Japanese glyph] a freshwater catfish that can grow very large, with skin but no scales, and a long anal fin that merges with the caudal fin. With its mouth wide open, the animal resembles a「sheath」or a scabbard used to hold weapons, hence the original English name of SHEATH FISH (as in 'green black and yellow fishy skin sheath or prepuce'), later morphed to SHEATFISH (just like 'popped corn' became 'popcorn' due to simpler pronunciation, 'iced cream' and 'iced tea,' and so on). Needless to point out perhaps, but the scaleless, smooth slippery skin along with the fish's coloration resembling gangrene, and the high fat content of the flesh, resemble the no-longer-integrated legs and feet of a concubine, particularly as both the fish and the human advance in years. The fishes can live beyond thirty years, about the same age as an old concubine if she was lucky, or an adolescent with a case of gonorrhea in the era of no antibiotics.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
