Original old Chinese meaning is to CATCH A GLIMPSE OF [a] HEAD…and「woody with prepuce」as the glans head peeping in and out of the sheath opening fits that description and meaning. Also most certainly「woody with hand in crotch」likely performing a fisting maneuver over the glans head might cause an observer to CATCH A GLIMPSE OF HEAD peeping out here and there.「Wood reversible」as those motions reversing in and out of the foreskin opening and fist: see 老闆 (「old man at the gateway to orifice quarters」), and all the later meanings in both Chinese and Japanese that refer to back and forth motions of hard wood in various states.
　Meanings of a flat board were derived from「reversible wood」that in most cases literally required flatness and flipping over, rather than a rod shape moving in and out of something such as a sheath, one's「old man peeping in and out at the gateway to orifices.」See 爼 as the glyph literally meaning a chopping block or cutting board,「much whacking with meat pile.」

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
