A「fast」(growing)「plant」or「fast growing emerging shafts」…「plant that comes early」and before all other plants in an area that recently has been cleared of vegetation, GRASSES, WEEDS. The concepts of ROUGH may have more to do a rustic field, meadow, pasture, steppe, savanna, etc., where GRASS often grows high (this meaning can also be applied figuratively), and CARELESS.
Note that「fast growing emerging shaft」is a replacement for「meat insertion」「inserted meat」「insert into meat」and so on (肏), meaning TO FUCK, COPULATE used literally or as an expletive, such as「Wow, am I fucked!」or simply「FUCK!.」In this sense, it appears that the Japanese pronunciation merges くさ with そう to form くそう or くそ, often translated as 'shit' in English [屎 sticky wad, jism in buttocks] when used as an expletive in dialogue, perhaps since in the past the subjects of defecating, fecal matter, or other scatological actions and functions were more socially acceptable than the act of procreating…or, the whole issue may revolve around the anal port of entry, integrating both shafting concepts as in 糞. Chinese version 肏 combines「insertion with spread legs and two persons」that is suggestive of at least one insertion anally, if not multiple sessions.
Use as weaving material indicates tensile strength exceeding that of ordinary rush grasses, and may refer to hemp that is also known as「herb, weed, grass」in some quarters, both a fine textile material and a source of rushes.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?
