PORCUPINES are rodents, and not closely related to BADGERS biologically, but both are「short-legged and tenacious」and will「span the whole range」of time, never fleeing or backing down from an attacker. The porcupine need not flee from an attacker, instead rolling its body into a defensive ball and presenting sharp, detachable quills in all directions. While a predator may get to take a snap or two at first, the quills embedded deeply in its mouth prevent much further interest in dining on the porcupine, as well as prevent the attacking animal from being able to simply close its jaw, resulting in a successful defensive strategy. In this manner, a porcupine will defeat even a tiger or lion.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of bored old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
