「Cerebral frontal lobe, individual self」above「dog」depicting a SCENT, normally emanating from one's bunghole, in the「thinking process of a dog」as STINK. Note that many modern fonts eliminate the marker stroke that differentiates「big」from「dog」creating some confusion. An animal with a large nose often does have a greater SENSE OF SMELL than one with a smaller nose due to a larger number of olfactory sense nerves present in the nasal cavities. The sense of smell of a dog is so keen that it recognizes all the members of its pack, the「individual selves」including its human master (the leader of the pack, in the dog's way of thinking) even after not seeing the person for many years. The cerebral frontal lobe is also where such memories are stored and olfactory sensations are processed in mammals such as dogs. Dogs identify humans and other animals by sniffing and recalling the smell of the anus, so it is natural for a dog to want to remember or become reacquainted with you by sniffing your ass hole (now you know why dogs sniff crotches).
And that「suspicious fishy smell being eyed on both hands」is the result of very recent activity with「self, emphasis on both hands.」
In its original parlance, describing a thing or situation as "smells fishy" did refer to having probable cause for extreme doubt and suspicion, but most folks do not realize why innocuous fish are so maligned in this manner. A fishy or pungent-smelling discharge from the vagina or penis may signify the presence of an infection, so caution was advised...and still is today.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect.
