Some scholars suggest glyph elements are four「grass, plant 茻」elements surrounding「dead meat, death」and refer to covering a dead body with grass, possibly as a temporary measure to conceal the corpse from an enemy so that it would not be hacked to pieces by them, or defiled by the「emerging shafts」of necromaniacs in the enemy ranks, or eaten by starving serfs, and so on, but now meaning to BURY. Most corpses are cremated, hence PUTTING UP ON A SHELF may refer to an urn full of ashes, or to cease using an item for some reason.「Many emerging shafts」(茻) with「dead meat」among them is an unmistakable reference to sexually transmitted disease, or may refer to burying many glans deeply into a soil pathway or passage of a corpse, or simply a「death within the community.」

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of bored old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else.
