Elements of the「crown, king within gateway」[restricting access to the brothels] and formerly meaning an EMBOLISM. Perhaps both major meanings of embolism apply: (1) some kind of physical blockage with the human system that causes a large build-up of fluids and bulging pressure. (2) a leap-day, or in other words, a day inserted into the normal calendar that is not normal, for the purpose of correcting a calendric error (in the modern calendar, February 29).
Understanding these elements as anything other than the king going down to visit the local orgyfest cannot account for the associated meanings: the harem schedule and access to the lord was highly scripted and monitored, prepared in exacting detail…so when the lord went outside of his harem for sexual release by visiting the local shaman-sponsored orgy, that was an EXTRA DAY INSERTED INTO THE SCHEDULE of days (the calendar) and the remaining schedule was shifted to maintain equal access by all the harem members.
As for the physical blockage aspect, one can assume that his reason for wanting to visit the orgy in the first place was to escape from the tightly controlled harem and untold thousands of jealous females, to simply blast his wad unfettered into any and all available orifices, and 'just be like one of the guys.'
Scholars explain the meaning of「illegitimate throne」as the appearance of a usurping pseudo-king at the city gates (presumably with an army in front of him), but considering the other given meanings, it is far more likely that initially the meaning was of the「king」seated upon, mounting the throne of an ILLEGITIMATE SERVICE PROVIDER or with the service provider mounted atop the king (the throne), one not listed on the official register of concubines, because the king had gone to visit the local brothel (who knows? probably heard a rumor about someone truly special, and wanted to verify it for himself by relieving an EMBOLISM of sticky wad).

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...)
