Oldest forms of this glyph are「many mouths, orifices」surrounding「woody, screwing emissions.」Speculation exists that the meaning of INTENSE derives from that sort of a communal gathering, as the elements were specifically selected by the sages to depict the quintessential experience of INTENSITY. Scholars will tell you that this element is many bird「mouths up in a treetop」since normally, the most common mouth in a tree is that of a bird, apart from locusts and caterpillars perhaps, and many birds in one tree can make an INTENSE amount of noise, particularly during an approaching typhoon or at dusk (see all the Used-In glyphs). CHIRPING of bird chicks may also represent「the merchandise when seeing a woody」and hoping to be the one selected for purchase or short-term rental (improves ranking among the other birds), CHIRPING INTENSELY to be noticed by the client. Glyph may have started this old English joke: Q.「Do you smoke after sex?」A.「I don't know, I never looked…」
