Formerly depicting a type of snarling, ferocious dog with enormous testicles (left element was「tiger」and「cauldron」獻, meaning the animal's cooked penis) used in SACRIFICIAL CONTRIBUTIONS, OFFERINGS and eaten afterwards, both the dogs and the penises—eating these items was the whole purpose of the offering. The simplification to「south」both resembles the former 'fleshpot' element and refers to a barbarous region (in the south of China: see 獞) where 'tiger penis, dog meat and gonads' were a favorite snack of princesses and other royal human authority figures in an effort to boost blood levels of testosterone. Both tiger penis and dog meat were often GIFTS TO LORDS or DEITIES (deified, religious-type human authority figures, in reality), DONATIONS, CONTRIBUTIONS, OFFERINGS, DEVOTED TO DEITIES, for better or for worse, by folks with lots of money hoping to CURRY FAVOR with the gods, or princesses, or other human authority figures, or the priestess running the temple-shrine, religious shamans and so on. Treating female service providers as commodities was also common, referring to them using the euphemism of「sacrificial meat.」
Given Japanese pronunciation refers to「standing erect waiting」as is performed in temples.
BIBLIOGRAPHY derives from the works「contributing」to a text. It is unclear why this glyph also represents the COUNTER FOR DRINKS, but both meanings may be related to the process of introducing newly-created glyphs before other sages for discussions with wine imbibing (see 籒).
What is unequivocal is the relationship to POLITICALLY RELATED DONATIONS (i.e., groups known to eat, or lick excessively, dog penis). In Mongolia still today, steaming yak or deer penis is a favorite snack of herdsman, but only because tigers and wild dogs are no longer ranging there, having already been consumed:

Meanwhile we produce Nutrition Oral Solution which could increase the immune ability, deer meat boiled dumpling, deer antler medicine pills, and other deer byproducts. Our products are awarded 'Gold medal of International deer products exhibition' and Wulanba deer meadow is awarded 'China deer industry star enterprise.' Jianyuan group is awarded 'Autonomous Region private scientific enterprise' [and so on…]」
