An「insect」(some are venomous, such as the Monarch and Pipevine Swallowtail) that flutters by like a falling「leaf」: BUTTERFLY. An「insect」that resembles「leaves」(butterflies can disguise themselves in trees to resemble a leaf). An insect that eats leaves, however while caterpillars (a butterfly in the larval stage of life) munch on the leaves of plants and not other parts generally, butterflies do not eat leaves…nourished instead by sucking juices into a long nose/mouth, or proboscis. Butterflies taste with their feet, and not much like butter. A butterfly in the larval stage also may have「many needles and pricks」covering its body that often are venomous, and anyone living near a tree infestation can tell you that the massive number of larvae are evidence of prodigious screwing emissions and egg fertilization. Then again, there have been those fluttering Madame Butterfly types for many, many generations in the world of humans, not only in Japan, and not only a century ago:「horny young dragon bastards, twenty or so, with a woody」as the prey of such butterflies.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles?
