【別形も参照】「脚が曲がった台座」または「水平方向に往復運動する棒」。足が不自由でよろめく脚。不安定でバランスが悪く、簡単に転倒して酔っ払って、適切に歩行できないことを表す。伝統的な刑罰の1つである「人の足を切り落とす」ことを表すのに使われる。「足が不自由で幅が広い」は、頭が重い、または非常に高く気高いことを表す。確かに、適切なバランスを維持できないほど重心が高すぎる不安定な状況を許容することは、少なくとも多少の愚かさを示している。
