「Dog, canine」surrounded by「four orifices」with one in every corner (all sides?). Perhaps an overt depiction of the CAPACITY of canines to copulate and use their natural reproductive TOOLS, ORGANS as VESSELS, CONTAINERS of life's essence doing four orifices (the GOODS, 品) in succession.
　It must be remembered that puppy dog, even today, is considered to be a great delicacy in China, along with civet cat, primate brains, and most all other flesh not knowingly consumed in the West (you never really know what is in canned meat, though). Perhaps referred to the SKILL needed to evenly divide a puppy as a meal. Then the USEFULNESS and UTILITY of such skill. Finally the UTENSILS and VESSELS used to divide and carry home the prized meat and ORGANS, the PRODUCT, the GOODS. Note that the upper portion of the glyph means「rowdy dog wailing, howling」and may not seem related to this glyph, although if a dog barked and howled long enough (mouth in all directions), it may end up in the community's supper pot vessels. Japanese variant omits the marker stroke of「dog」for a stroke count of one less.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect.
