「Many soldier flags, many ears」means WHISPERING as in passing along a rumor.「From ear to ear to ear」whispering some gossip.「Ear」resembles the shape of a vertical flag attached to a pole used in China and Japan to identify soldiers as belonging to one side or the other of a battle, and「many of them」may be a battalion of foot soldiers, with rumors circulating among the「soldiers with flags」from ear to ear. Clearly, rumors would spread much faster among foot soldiers facing death while huddled and whispering among the trees awaiting order to charge much more quickly (in seconds) than scattered serfs hoeing gardens among the hills and valleys (may take years, or decades), so that「ears of soldiers with their lord's flag up backside」is a much more poignant depiction than valleys and hills sparsely populated with old serfs, as some scholars suggest.
　「Many adjustments of positioning and balance, many flags」also refers to a RUSTLING SOUND caused by many fluttering flags, by pleats in a skirt (resembling Asian flags), or leaves being blown, or any other large group of soft fluttering actions that when combined cause this sound, such as when rustling a neighbor's meat by grabbing his herd animals, or「talented hand use with many adjustments of positioning, soft fluttering actions」(攝).

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else.
