Although unsubstantiated clinically, yawning was thought to be triggered by a buildup in the blood and/or lungs of excess carbon dioxide, which a yawn helps to「expel, get rid of.」…whether that is truly the case, yawning does indeed expel, get rid of a large volume of air. In fact, a fetus surrounded by amniotic fluid also yawns from time to time, so the definitive causes of a yawn may be many and still not fully understood. Some modern research suggests that YAWNING cools the brain, but the ancient Chinese may not have had the necessary equipment to measure such a short-term variation of internal temperatures. Other theories say yawning is a form of communication that offers various social benefits, such as dispersing one's sex pheromones (see 呴), and yawning when we wish to lie down or are bored and seeking some other activity from which more pleasure can be derived, supported by research concluding that contagious yawning is associated with organisms having greater empathy.「Orifice that lets go」suggests birds transferring vomitus via beak contact, DISGORGE. Most conscious folks open their mouth widely while vomiting, since doing so relieves them of the later trouble of dislodging packed vomitus from the nasal cavity, but unconscious folks who vomit often aspirate it into the lungs and nose, suffocating or drowning in their own puke.「Orifice and sidestepping, parry」is suggestive of both someone with severe halitosis executing a yawn while with a buddy, or simply exercising prudence while near a drunken companion.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs most likely were originally designed by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that), representing Chinese society many thousands of years ago, but intended NOT as a written or spoken language when created. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system! Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is, and often with multiple correct answers to each riddle, the same as is true today. Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? But, have there been necessary rewrites and altered explanations of the original elemental meanings over the centuries?

No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...)
