[Japanese variant] formerly「flow, fluids」with「cease movement, foot-dis-integrating」three times (澁) meaning「absolutely stop, stumbling」and before that「flow, cut and halt movement (doubled: 澀)」representing the painful process occurring twice, once with each foot. Bottom two「cease movement, foot-dis-integrating」elements were replaced by「dry stickiness, emissions in all directions」(without the inside「stream」element) and resembling「puckered」as perhaps a mouth or an anus. One's anus may be puckered after a bout of terror-induced diarrhea in order to hold back the loose stools and drippings (such as when spontaneously defecating prior to or during the foot-dis-integrating procedure), and an ASTRINGENT is often effective for stanching the unwanted discharge, as in「stop, stop, stop that flow!.」Astringents also cause your lips to pucker naturally, and cause a「dry sticky」mouth.
TAN-colored is derived either from the color of diluted feces in diarrhea, or, the color of a loincloth so permanently stained, or, perhaps the color of unripe persimmons having the same astringent taste being described by this glyph, and unripe persimmons are used to stop diarrhea, with tannins.
You can guess yourself why the associated meaning of TARDY applies, as in a person may have been delayed by a messy bowel movement or two, or three for that matter. HESITANT, RELUCTANT is also obvious, as one doesn't normally jump with both feet into anything when nursing a severe case of the runs, nor to eat anything known to be an ASTRINGENT, not to mention reluctance for having one's feet bones mashed, one foot at a time.
Meaning of REFINED TASTE or REFINEMENT probably is associated with being「tight-assed with stiff upper lip, orally and rectally puckered all the time, anal retentive」without relief or relaxation. It has been suggested as well that there is an association at times between the REFINED TASTES of rich foods and loose stools, cause one to keep one's anus puckered to avoid an accidental discharge or inappropriate flatulence with loose stool, a cause of regret.

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of bored old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment
(see 籒 for that)
and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language.
If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system.
Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is!
Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up.
No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else.
This site describes glyph meanings, not people.
These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect.
The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language?
Despite how bad the human world is today, do you actually believe that the so-called good old days were any better? Or they could only have been worse?
By the way, with a limited number of the same elements used by the sages again and again to form these glyphs,
you should expect to find the same explanations again and again, as tedious as that may become, and as an inherent trait of any dictionary.
This site explains the dual meanings of glyphs most often ignored by other sources that provide you with only the sanctioned definition, generally.
