RETTING HEMP fibers or those of other plants used for making textiles, separating the textile fibers from all other plant material. The「flower buds」(菻) contain the greatest proportion of psychoactive chemicals when burned in「caverns」as part of torches (see 蒸,「plant of civilization」). Soft hemp cloth can be made into fine bedding, linen, blankets.
　「Retting is a process in which pectineus substances that bind together elemental bast fibres become degraded. This progression is completed either by microorganisms present on the stems or in soil, acid/bases, or by special enzymes. Some call it a controlled rotting, which indicates that a farmer needs to oversee and properly manage the process. …Field retting is accomplished by leaving harvested hemp stalks on the ground for several weeks and relying on the weather to facilitate the process. Length of the retting process depends on availability of moisture and air temperature. Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of bored old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else.
