　Beetles form the largest group of living things, accounting for about 25% of all known animal life forms on the planet as counted by the number of species. The ants probably hold the top position for sheer combined animal body mass and in number of individuals (excluding prokaryotes and single-celled eukaryotes). Fly maggots and beetles normally colonize corpses and carcasses from the top and the ants from beneath, ingesting the putrid flesh in ever-thickening TANGLED MASS of bodies and SWARMS in layers by sucking up the juices formed as bacteria and larval secretions decompose the flesh.
