Meanings of elements
ROD of WILD DOG
…or: ONE WILD DOG
…or: WILD DOG with QUICK MOVEMENTS IN ANY DIRECTION
…or: STIFF PENIS HIDDEN CONCEALED with HEAD SLIDING and STRAIGHT ERECTION in WOODY STAKE TAPERED DRIVING, SHOOTING DISCHARGE, WAGGING ONE'S BACULUM and ROD
Chinese zodiac sign of the DOG,「one, rod of wild dog, quick movements in any direction」moving as the head of a pack or an「array of canids.」Oldest version of DOG (i.e., likely being the original glyph) as it appears in the Chinese zodiac.「One wild dog」as the leader of the pack, the alpha male (a「dog.」Females are the「bitches」) who directs the pack to attack as if one ferocious beast, and who is always first in the copulation line when happening upon a bitch in heat.
In addition to containing an actual bone in the boner called a baculum that enables copulation at nearly a moment's notice when such opportunities arise, the「rod of canine males」as a DOG, or THE DOG if you will, is endowed with a very special penis, unlike any other penis. The dog schlong is equipped with two glands located at the base of the shaft that engorge and harden upon erection, normally after penetration into the bitch's vaginal orifice. These locking bulbus glandis swell large enough to prevent the penis from being extracted from the bitch's vagina for quite some time, normally ten to fifteen minutes, give or take a few minutes, to allow the dog's semen sufficient time to get enough of a head start toward the bitch's ova that the male might actually sire some pups, rather than the next dick dog waiting to mount any bitch in heat (unlike modern humans, who normally are pleased and prefer the semen of the next dick dog that mounts a bitch in heat to fertilize the bitch's ova). Particularly among dogs and bitches that are copulating with another canid for the first time, this inability to withdraw can become quite distressing as the animals fight, howl, scream and yelp, trying all sorts of painful positions in order to liberate the dog's penis from the bitch's orifice.
Perhaps「array of erect wild dogs as one」because this glyph and the related glyph () can be substituted, apparently, depicting the dogs of war as one pack of attacking troops.
Perhaps coincidentally, this glyph may also be formed by「hand with emphasis on one arrayed wagging penis」as a modern interpretation of a sort of DOG.
Scholars suggest this version perhaps can be interpreted as battle axe.

Modern definitions (that generally disregard history) …excluding politically incorrect concepts and other meanings deemed offensive today; may list only pigeonholed definitions, euphemisms, or meaningless mnemonics)

Always keep in mind that these glyphs were originally created by groups of clever old men as vulgar riddles and analogies for their own entertainment (see 籒 for that) and represented Chinese society many thousands of years ago, and not as a written or spoken language. If these glyphs had been intended for language use, the sages could not have possibly designed a worse system. Is it truly possible that all these glyphs started out as off-color jokes and puzzles? Yes! It is! Sex had no shame in ancient China. Why would it? And now, there is a cover-up. No one is suggesting these glyphs depict contemporary life in China, Japan, or anywhere else. This site describes glyph meanings, not people. These glyphs however, describe many and various things, including people, long before there were any notions of becoming politically incorrect. The question to be answered is, should these glyphs continue being used, by anyone, anywhere, for expressing language? (More...) Despite how bad the human world is today, do you actually believe that the so-called good old days were any better? Or they could only have been worse?

By the way, with a limited number of the same elements used by the sages again and again to form these glyphs, you should expect to find the same explanations again and again, as tedious as that may become, and as an inherent trait of any dictionary. This site explains the dual meanings of glyphs most often ignored by other sources that provide you with only the sanctioned definition, generally.
